Frequently Asked Questions About Puerto Rican Birth Certificates
1) Who can request a birth certificate from Puerto Rico?
The registered person may request it if they are over 18 years of age, as may their father, mother, children, grandchildren, grandparents, legal representative, or heirs, provided they submit the required documents to verify their identity and relationship.
2) What form of identification do I need?
You must present a valid photo ID, such as a passport, driver's license, or official ID. The ID must be legible and show all the necessary information.
3) What happens if my ID has expired?
An expired ID does not necessarily meet the requirements of the Demographic Registry, but it can help us assess your situation.
Before placing your order, please fill out the form and submit a copy of both sides of your expired ID. Explain why it has expired and indicate what other official documents you have available to verify your identity.
4) What happens if I don't have valid identification?
Don't place your order just yet. First, we need to determine whether there are other ways to verify your identity.
Please fill out the form and explain why you do not have valid identification and what official documents you still have, such as an expired ID or passport, a Medicare or Medicaid card, a Social Security card, an employment document, or a school document.
5) Can I request a birth certificate for a family member?
Yes, if you are one of the authorized individuals. You may be required to present your identification and documents proving your relationship to the registered person, such as birth, marriage, or death certificates, as applicable.
6) What is the difference between a regular certificate and an official transcript?
The standard certificate is the most common format, in letter size, and is used for most administrative procedures.
The full or extended certificate is issued in legal size, contains additional information, and is typically requested for special procedures, such as obtaining Spanish citizenship, correcting errors, or changing a name.
7) How long does the process take?
For the standard certificate, we offer “ normal ” processing (15 business days), “fast” processing (10 business days), and “urgent” processing (5 business days).
Birth records dating back 100 years or more may take up to 30 calendar days to process. A full birth certificate may take up to 30 calendar days to process.
8) What is the current official format?
The current official format for birth certificates in Puerto Rico is the blue one, which has been issued since July 2010. Certificates issued before that date do not conform to the current official format.
9) Can you correct an error or change a name on the certificate?
Requesting a certified copy does not correct errors or change names. If the certificate contains incorrect information, there are discrepancies between documents, or you wish to change a name, please see our Name Change or Correction service.
Do you have any special circumstances before placing your order?
Expired ID, lack of identification, or other specific circumstances.
Use this form only if you need a preliminary evaluation before placing your order.
We respond only by email within 1–2 business days.
